State and State Quals

In case any of our alumni missed it, we were League Champions, continuing the tradition of being SCDL League Champions for 15 years in a row! We qualified 43 to State and this year it was at Lowell High School in San Francisco.

At State, we placed 5th! We had 9 Semi Finalists and 5 Finalists.

Semifinalists: Linda, Brenda, Christopher, Evan, Karen, Emily, Ethan, Hubert and Raymond.

Finalists: Kathleen, Jenny, Maggie, Kyle, Keshan and Helen (Duo).

Thank you administrators and parents for all of your support!

We’re On TV!

Not quite, but someone is. Happy June all supporters of the Gabrielino Speech and Debate team! I thought this would be a fun post if you haven’t yet seen it on air. Our very own alumni, Adrian Zaw, is in his first national commercial! I personally spotted him on air a couple weeks ago. If you haven’t yet seen it on air, you can catch him here! Do you feel it? Just like the holidays, Speech season is here! And nobody is more excited for its arrival than us!

Our team recently kicked off the competition season (and the Thanksgiving break) by hosting Fall Novice, with of course, special thanks to the parents and volunteers who are always there to support us.

Pictured are the champions of the tournament who had the best over all cumulative score in their individual events:

Hello Eagles! We apologize for keeping you all in the dark of our Fundraiser… it’s been a busy couple of weeks. As you know, we had a tournament the next day and we we’re busy preparing for Fall Debate, the first League Debate Tournament of the year! Next on the tournament schedule is Fall Novice at our very own home, Gabrielino High School.

We had such a great turnout at our new location at our Fundraiser it was amazing! There was well over 200 people in attendance and something for everyone to do. Face painting for the kids and students, silent auction for the adults and yummy desserts for everyone to enjoy!

Thank you all for your support! We raised enough money to cover entry fees and transportation! I hope you all had a wonderful time! If you were not able to make it but would still like to support us, there are a couple ways to do that.
1. Take a Ralphs Community Contribution Program with you on your next shopping trip at Ralphs. Have them scan it and each time you shop, Ralphs will donate a percentage of your purchase to our team. (You can pick up the form from the Speech Room or email us your address)

2. Subscribe to the San Gabriel Sun at a promotional rate of $14.95 for 6 months. (Normally $45) Half of the proceeds ($7.50) will be donated to the team and the other half will be donated to the Navy Seal Foundation, a nonprofit created after the tragic deals of our Navy Seals in August. (You can pick up the form from the Speech room or email us your address)

3. Spread the word about the Newsletter, the Ralphs Community Contribution Program and the San Gabriel Sun Promotion! Every bit helps!

We recently kicked off our year with the Icebreaker tournament hosted at our very own school and Package Deal at Arcadia high school.

Thank you to all the parents and alumni who came back to help start the season. Your continual support is beyond appreciated. We are currently looking forward to a promising season as we prepare for the upcoming tournament, Jack Howe, which takes place THIS Saturday at Long Beach. It’s the first big invitational of the year! Things are heating up and we’re just getting started!

At last, the time has arrived for our Second Annual Speech and...

At last, the time has arrived for our Second Annual Speech and Debate Team Fundraiser! This year, we’re having it at a new location, the San Gabriel Presbyterian Church, on September 23, 2011 from 6pm to 9pm.

This fundraiser was created to bridge the gap from the Community of San Gabriel and the Gabrielino Speech and Debate team. It is also our solution to the budget cuts and shrinking grant programs that are affecting the program.

Last year was a great first run of the event that we learned a lot from. This year, we’re taking the event to a whole new level. There are plenty MORE games, prizes, and entertainment, and we’re going to have some performances!

Welcome to the first ever Gabrielino Speech and Debate Newsletter!

With the start of the new year, we’re glad to share with you some pictures from the National Forensics tournament where our students Jane and Brian placed 5th in Duo Interpretation, Kevin placed 2nd in United States Extemp, and the team placed 1st in the speech category and 4th overall. As we send our Class of 2011 off to college, we’re proud to say that we’re gearing up for yet another competitive season of speech and are planning for our biggest fundraiser of the year: A Night Out on the Town: Deep Sea Adventure. Stay tuned for more information!
